Is suicidal depression preventable?

Depression is classified as a major mood disorder and can happen to everyone. It is considered to be a serious mental illness that can negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.

HOW CAN I TELL IF SOMEONE I KNOW HAS DEPRESSION?

Some of the causes of depression are:-

1. Genetics

2. Negative events

3. long term stress

4. Personality

5. Drugs and alcohol use

6. Hormonal changes

Major Depressive Disorder Symptoms

o Depressed mood

o Loss of interest/pleasure in activities

o Significant weight loss (not including dieting) or weight gain; decrease or increase in appetite

o Experience of insomnia or hypersomnia

o Fatigue or loss of energy

o Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt

o Diminished ability to think or concentrate

o Recurring thoughts of death, suicidal idealization, or having a suicide plan or suicide attempt

Depression, versus ordinary unhappiness, is characterized by longer and deeper feelings of despondency and the presence of certain characteristic symptoms.Very often it leads to even suicides.Suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people. A major cause of suicide is mental illness, very commonly depression.

Risk factors for suicide in a person who is experiencing depression:

o impulsivity,

o history of aggression,

o substance abuse,

o chronic pain,

o diagnosed physical illnesses such as stroke, heart disease or cancer,

o social isolation/withdrawal

Depressed people also develop a feeling of ALL or NOTHING. Grounds are divided into black and white. And when things go against their will they tend to adapt an unusual behavior.

But suicide is preventable. If you know someone is thinking about suicide or threatening to kill themselves, don’t leave them alone. People who commit suicides don’t want to diebut just want to end their pain. Dont dismiss their talks just as threats, instead get help.

And to all the people who are going through any hard phases in their lives and are afraid to open up, IT’S OK TO ASK FOR HELP…. 🙂
